What will we copy?

Under laws of the fair use doctrine it is generally permissible to make a single copy of a lawfully purchased copyrighted recording for personal use. This means we can copy that video onto another video/DVD for your personal use only.  Making a single copy won’t usually raise concerns so long as the copy is made from a legally purchased original that you legitimately own and the copy is just for your own personal use. Sharing, giving away the copy or lending it to others is not a personal use and is not legal.

We will make one copy only and you must note that this copy will not be distributed, sold, or used for any purpose other than your own personal viewing.

Copyrighted material will be duplicated only with a signed waiver form Back to FAQ list

Can any tape be copied?

No. Certain tapes have copy protection safeguards that will not allow it.

Sometimes tapes can degrade or be too far damaged to the point where a useable copy can not be made.  Back to FAQ list

I was told my tapes can’t be transferred because of “alignment problems”.

This is a very common problem for many 8mm tapes that were recorded using older “Sony” brand camcorders and/or tapes that have been recorded in longer tape speeds like “EP” and “LP”.

Most transfer facilities do not have the expertise needed in order to make useable copies of these tapes. A playback machine must be purposefully mis-aligned in order to play back these tapes. Professional Video Services has a set up charge of $30.00 to do these type tapes. It’s still possible to have some occasional flutter or "jumpiness" in the final product, but it will be significantly, if not entirely removed.  Back to FAQ list

Why should I transfer my videotapes to DVD?

Videotapes are magnetic and can be affected by magnetic fields, temperature and humidity. The reading heads on your VCR can also cause wear on the surface of your tape. Whether you play your videotape or not, the materials on the tape are breaking down causing blurred images, loss of color/sharpness and worst of all making your tape un-viewable. DVDs are not magnetic. They are optical so they are unaffected by stray magnetic fields, are more stable and can endure climate and environmental changes better than videotapes. The shelf life of a DVD is estimated to be 5-50+ years depending upon the quality of the DVD.  Back to FAQ list

My videotape has dark spots and is no longer as clear as it once was. Can you restore it?

In addition to preserving your video on DVD, in many cases we can enhance the quality of your video image. By using professional quality equipment and state-of-the-art digital equipment, we can often improve the quality currently on the tape.  Back to FAQ list

There are many different types of DVDs. What kind of DVD will I receive?

The DVD you receive from us will be a DVD-R, the most widely used recordable format that is compatible with most DVD players. Most DVD players and computer DVD drives will play this format. We will make you a DVD+R upon specific request. Back to FAQ list

Can you make extra copies of my DVD to send to friends and family?

Additional copies can be made. The cost depends on the number of copies you order and is lower if you order the copies at the same time you place your order for the original. We do not keep a copy of your original after we complete your order so you must request additional copies when you place your original order. We can not make multiple copies of copyrighted materials. Back to FAQ list

My videotape is old and/or in bad shape. Can you still transfer it to DVD?

We are able to repair most video tape problems including wrinkled tape, broken tape, twisted tape and most other types of physical damage. All repaired tapes have the significant damage cut out and a high quality splice put in them.

This splice will generally run through most machines but not always, no matter how good the splice is. Splices do not generally run well through 8mm and mini DV machines and will often jam in the play back machine or clog the heads of the play back machine.

Mold, water damage and other types of environmental damage can sometimes be repaired but require far more work and will require examination.  Please write if you have environmental tape damage and we will let you know if we can be of service to you.  The chances of recovery are low, but not impossible when dealing with environmental tape damage.

After a physically damaged video tape has been repaired, we strongly recommend you have it transferred to a new tape or a DVD.

When we receive your videotape, we will perform a visual examination to check for signs of damage. If we see damage, we will contact you before attempting to transfer your video.  Back to FAQ list

How do I know you won't mix my tapes up with someone else's?

When tapes/media are received from you, they are immediately labeled with your information. A work order is prepared listing the entire contents of your order.

Your order is then placed in an individual container. Your order stays together until it is totally completed where it will be carefully packaged and sent back to you along with your receipt.  Back to FAQ list

Is the content of my tapes kept private?

Absolutely. Professional Video Services Inc. does not view content on your tape unless our software indicates a problem. We guarantee discretion and privacy to our clients.  Back to FAQ list

I'm ready to place an order. How do I get my order to you?

It's easy. Just fill out the order form on our website or simply send us what you have, listing what you want done. Be sure to write in any special instructions.

We can offer you a free estimate based upon what you send.

Print the order form and just send them in. Please be sure to label your videotapes with a title (if any) of the video(s) so that we can print the title on your DVD. Back to FAQ list

 How long will it take?

Most orders are completed within 1-4 business days of receiving it and then shipped USPS priority mail or United Parcel Service (UPS). Obviously, during periods of peak business or very large orders, this could change. We will do our best to accommodate your special needs.  Back to FAQ list

Can you ship overnight?

Yes. Professional Video Services Inc. charges $30.00 for overnight shipping for most small orders.  Shipping charges for large orders will be calculated.

What types of tape will you repair?

We repair all consumer video tapes including BETA, VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, SVHS–C, 8MM tape, Hi 8 Tape, Digital 8 tape, and Mini DV tape.

*We highly recommend you have your tape copied to a duplicate tape format or DVD after being repaired.

The repaired tape should be labeled as the "Master" copy and saved.

*Repaired tapes can often cause problems in a machine no matter who does the repair or how good it has been repaired.

Heads can become clogged and tapes can sometimes become jammed in the machine requiring costly repairs when repaired tapes are used.

These problems are far more common in smaller tape formats such as 8mm tape or mini DV tape formats.  Back to FAQ list

How do I send you my tapes?

We accept all forms of shipping.

As an added service…Professional Video Services Inc. will ship you pre-paid packaging. Upon request, we'll send you packaging materials, including a prepaid box, so you can safely ship your tapes or media to us.

Just let us know how many tapes (media) you have and we will send you a quote for this service. Our packaging materials include an assortment of foam padding to ensure your videotapes arrive unharmed. Your videotape return box will have prepaid USPS return labels applied to it; so you may simply pack your tapes, and then drop them off at any USPS location or have your mail carrier take it.  Back to FAQ list

Will my original tapes/media be returned to me?

Yes. We will return everything you originally sent to us along with your new copies.  Back to FAQ list

Can you recover video/images if I’ve recorded over it?

Not with video tapes. It is impossible to recover images from TAPES that have been recorded over.  We can usually recover photos and video from digital photo cards even if erased, formatted or damaged by smoke/water.

Back to FAQ list

Do you work with PAL or SECAM formats?

Professional Video Services Inc. is not currently transferring to/from these formats. Please check back in the future as this may change.

PAL and SECAM are video broadcast standards used in Europe, parts of Asia, etc….

The United States and North America uses the standard known as NTSC

We can repair PAL and SECAM tapes but can NOT copy or transfer these formats.  Back to FAQ list

How good will my tape/DVD be?

Professional Video Services Inc. uses only professional, grade “A” Media. Grade A media is the highest standard for which media can be rated. Most other companies use inferior DVD disks that have inferior materials and dyes in their disks just to save money. These lower grade DVD's may result in far more recording errors, poor compatibility with different DVD players  and a have a much shorter storage life.

Professional Video Services Inc. also uses only top quality, name brand tapes for our tape duplication services.

Our disks and tapes definitely cost us more, but we believe your videos and memories are worth it.  Back to FAQ list
